Abstract

In Indonesia, high level thinking skills in mathematics are still relatively low. Students do not have the ability to solve the questions that are required to think high (Wibowo, et al 2016: 74-75). The low thinking ability of students is inseparable from the learning process that is in school. One reason is that students are not accustomed to solving questions at a high level of thinking or known as HOTS. As a result, many mistakes were made by students in solving HOTS problems. The objective of this research is to describe the type and the percentage of the student’s error in solving HOTS type of algebra questions and analyzing the factors causing student’s error. The HOTS type questions includes 3 aspect, namely aspect of analyzing, evaluating, and creating. While the errors studied were based on Newman’s error category which consisted of reading errors, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding. This is a qualitative descriptive research with research subjects 31 students of class VII A in SMP Negeri 1 Teras. The techniques of collecting data are written tests, interviews, and documentation. The techniques of analyzing data are data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusions, and verification. The findings show the errors in the analyzing aspects, there are 46.67% of transformation errors and 53.33% of process skill errors; while in the evaluating aspects there are 33.33% of understanding errors, 54.17% of transformation errors and 12.50% of process skill errors; whereas in the creating aspect, there are 36.67% of transformation errors and 63.33% of process skill errors. The factors that cause the dominant of student’s error in the analyzing aspect is the lack of students’ understanding of algebraic concepts, and in evaluating aspects is the students' low ability to interpret mathematical problems, whereasin creating aspect is the lack of understanding the algebraic form of operating material.
