Abstract

Cancer ranks the first cause of death worldwide, one type of cancer with the highest mortality rate in women is breast cancer. Laos (Alpinia galanga) is one of the plants known to have cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. Other plants that are also known to have cytotoxic activity are aloe vera (Aloe vera (L.) Burm. F.), krangean bark (Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Press), sembung leaves (Blumea balsamifera L.), and coffee beans (Coffea L.). The purpose of this study was to determine the synergistic effect of the four ethyl acetate fractions of the plants on their cytotoxic activity towards ethyl acetate fractions of laos in T47D cells. The simplisia of plants are macerated with methanol, and then fractionated using ethyl acetate:water (1:1). The method used in the cytotoxic test was MTT assay. The positive control used was doxorubicin. The synergistic effect was determined based on the IC50 value of single and combination laos samples. The IC50 obtained for single laos sample was 53.735 µg/mL, while the lowest IC50 value combination sample was 74.764 µg/mL (combination of laos-sembung leaf). The conclusion of this research is that ethyl acetate fraction of aloe vera, krangean bark, sembung leaf, and coffee beans did not have synergistic effect with ethyl acetate fraction of laos upon its cytotoxic activity against T47D cells.
