Abstract

Nomophobia is the tendency of individuals to use smartphones excessively so that adolescents experience dependency and anxiety, worry if they cannot connect or be away from a smartphone. Nomophobia can have an impact on social, physical and psychological health therefore nomophobia is an important variable to consider but research to reduce nomophobia is still rare. One study was found to reduce nomophobia but the study just focused on cognitive and behavioral changes. There is intervention that covers cognitive, affective, behavioral, moral and interpersonal aspects is mindfulness. Mindfulness training has been proven to have many benefits including reducing stress, anxiety, depression and being able to improve subjective well-being. For this reason, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness training to reduce nomophobia in adolescents. The research design was a quasi experimental design using the Nonrandomized Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design model. Respondents in this study were 14 high school students classified as nomophobia divided into two groups, 7 students for experimental group and 7 student for control group. Two groups were given pretest, posttest, and follow-up using the nomophobia scale which had a reliability of 0,849. Hypothesis testing use the Mann Whitney U test to test the significance of differences between the experimental group and the control group and the Wilcoxon Test to test the significance of the differences between the pretest-posttest in the experimental group. The results showed that there were significant differences in the experimental group given training compared to the control group with a value of Z = -2,945 and p = 0,003 (p <0.05). Wilcoxon test in the experimental group showed a value of Z = -2,366 and p = 0,018 at the pretest-posttest then the value of Z = 2,371 and p = 0,018 at the pretest-follow-up. This means that there are differences in nomophobia levels before and after being given mindfulness training. Thus it can be concluded that mindfulness training is effective in reducing nomophobia in adolescent. Keywords: Adolesence, Mindfulness training, Nomophobia
