Abstract

Cultivating the values of a religious character in children is very important. This needs to be cultivated early to equip them with good character and to be able to distinguish between good behavior and bad behavior. SLBN Surakarta besides providing education services for children with special needs, such as blind, deaf, mentally retarded, physically disabled, and autistic, also provide knowledge to students how important the values of religious character by cultivating them through religious activities and the activities of teaching and learning process. This study aims to describe what are the values of religious character that cultivated in students and describe how the teachers can cultivate the values of a religious character in students. The type of this research is field research with subjects from SLBN Surakarta teachers and using a qualitative descriptive approach. In accordance with the approach used, the researcher collecting the data by interview, observation and documentation techniques. This study uses deductive analysis based on a theoretical framework that matches the title and then compares it with data in the field. The results of the study show what character values are cultivated in students, and how doestheteachers cultivate this religious character towards mentally retarded students. Cultivating the values of religious characters on mentally retarded children in SLBN Surakarta using two ways, in class and outside the class cultivation. In class cultivation which cover:Praying before and after learning, memorizing short surah in Al-Qur'an, and learning material. While cultivation outside the classroom includes:Environment and society socialization, praying (shalat) together, and doing routine culture. The values that have been cultivated in students by the SLBN Surakarta teacher covering seven character values, those are the Value of Discipline, Value of Responsibility, Value of Tolerance, Value of Reading Joy, Values of Compassion, Value of Confidence, and Value of Environmental Care. As for these values, the cultivation has not been maximized or not all values are cultivated due to the limited ability of students.
