Abstract

Colon cancer was the one of five main types of death-causing cancer in the world originating from normal intestinal epithelial transformation of adenomatous polyps and invasive cancer. Current cancer treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy generally have side effects of nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and fatigue. Therefore it is necessary to develop anticancer treatments that are safer from natural ingredients. Spirulina platensis is one of the blue green algae that can be developed as an anticancer agent. The purpose of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effects of ethanol and methanol extract of Spirulina platensis on WiDr cells and their secondary metabolites. The cytotoxic tested using MTT-assay with concentration series 500; 250; 125; 62.5 and 31.25 μg/mL. The mobile phase that used in TLC assay was ethyl acetate: n-hexane (7: 3) with vanillin-sulfuric acid, sitroborat, FeCl3 and Liebermann-Burchard as spray reagents. The result of cytotoxic test showed that ethanol and methanol extract Spirulina platensis did not have cytotoxic activity against WiDr cells. Ethanol extract of Spirulina platensis contain flavonoid, steroid and β-carotene pigments, while methanol extract contains terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics, steroids and β-carotene pigments.
