Abstract

This research paper is intended (1) to find the method of teaching writing recount genre applied by the teacher in SMA Negeri 3 Temanggung including the objective of teaching writing, material of teaching, the role of teacher, classroom activities, (2) to describe the problems faced by the teacher in teaching writing recount genre. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of research is the first year students of SMA Negeri 3 Temanggung. The methods of collecting data are observation, interview and document. The data are field note, interview script and document which are taken from event, informants, and documents. The result of this research shows that the method of teaching writing recount genre applied by the teacher is Genre-based Instruction. The objective of teaching writing is to enable the students understanding English as a means of communication and to enable the students in being active in practicing English in written form. The material used by the teacher is not only taken from the English textbook entitled “Developing English Competencies” but, also different material related to the lesson. The teacher not only becomes a teacher who teaches the students, but she also becomes a need analyst, curriculum developer, material developer, counselor, and observer. The teacher conducts several classroom activities that consist of four procedures, namely 1) Building Knowledge of Field (BKOF), 2) Modeling of Text (MOT), 3) Joint Construction of Text (JCOT), 4) Independent Construction of text (ICOT). The problems faced by the teacher in teaching writing are class management, limited time, different capability of the students, the students’ difficulties in mastering component of writing, and unstable motivation of the students.
