Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the learning strategies used by the third year students in learning English in SDN 3 Karanganyar, Sragen. The research studies learning strategies used by the students of elementary school at the third year in learning English. The type of the research is a case study which aims to describe the third year student’s leraning strategies in learning English. The methods of collecting the data are interview, observation, and document. The data are taken from the subject of the research in the form of field notes, interview, and document. The result of the research shows that the students use three kinds of learning strategies based on O’Malley and Chamot; metacognitive, cognitive, and social/affective. Metacognitive strategies cover advance organizer, directed attention, self-evaluation, and selective attention. While cognitive strategies involve repetition, note taking, deduction, imagery, and inferencing, the last, the subject uses two types of social/affective strategies, namely question and cooperation. Each of them modifies each other. Totally, they apply eleven strategies.
