Abstract

This research aims at improving the students’ English Vocabulary trough Montessori method. The specific aims of this research are (a) to describe the implementation of Montessori method in improving students’ vocabulary mastery, especially in understanding about meaning, pronunciation, spelling, and how to use in the sentence, (b) to describe the students’ response to the technique implemented that is using Montessori method, (c) to identify the problem in understanding about meaning, pronunciation, spelling, and how to use in the sentence, and (d) to identify the problem solving in understanding meaning, pronunciation, spelling, and how to use in the sentence at SD Muhammadiyah Kottabarat, Surakarta. This research is a classroom action research, which is taken as result of reflection on phenomena done by the writer, and it rises from some problems, such as (a) the students’ low capability of understanding meaning, (b) the students’ poor pronunciation, (c) the students’ poor spelling, (d) how to use in the sentence, and (e) the students’ low motivation in joining teaching and learning processes. In edition they are bored with the teacher’s traditional technique. Here, the writer chooses Montessori method as the method to solve those problems. The writer employs classroom action research. To overcome this problem, the writer conducts the research in three cycles. Each cycle is conducted in four meetings. Each cycle consists of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The data are taken from the observing, test, and interview. The result of the test shows that the number of students who in this research the students’ vocabulary especially in their understanding of meaning, pronunciation, spelling, and how to use in the sentence is improved. It can be seen in the average score on their pre- test and post-test. The average score of the written pre-test is 76,43 while its last post-test is 94,64. This score indicates the students’ improvement is spelling and how to use in the sentence. Whereas the average score of oral pre-test is 70,36 and its last post- test is 88,93 and this score indicates their improvement in the pronunciation and understanding of meaning. It means that the teaching vocabulary using Montessori method is appropriate and useful to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery. The appropriate media used in Montessori method for improving students’ vocabulary mastery are tape, puzzle, picture fruits and vegetables, colorful paper, original and unoriginal fruit and vegetables, and origami; this media can attract the students to learn it.
