Abstract

The objective of this work was to investigate the relationship between the thickness and the hardness of chromium coating electroplated using 3, 6, 7.5, 9, 12 Volt with a fixed electrical current of 5 Ampere and a plating time of 50 minutes . The electroplating experiment was conducted on steel as the substrate, with an electrolyte solution for plating chrome which contained of chromic acid 250 g/l, sulphuric acid 2.5 g/l, and kalium cyanide KC-15 10 g/l. The thickness of the layer was observed from the product cross sectional area using an optical microscope, whereas the hardness was evaluated using a Vickers microhardness tester. The result demonstrates that the microhardness increases as the increase of the voltage. The use of varied voltages of 3, 6, 7.5, 9, and 12 Volt has increased the hardness of 138.9, 146.6, 159.8, 174.4, and 181.1 HV, respectively. The increase of hardness with increasing the voltage indicates that the residual stress of the layer got increased.
