Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of variations in dyeing time on layer thickness, surface hardness and surface roughness of the chrome layer on titanium. The coating process was done using an electroplating method with a titanium substrate as a cathode and lead as an anode. The parameters used were variations in long dyeing time of 30, 45, 60 and 75 minutes. Testing of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-Ray) was done to see the layer structure and elemental composition of the layers. The measurement of layer thickness was done using micro photographs. Hardness testing was done with Micro Vickers and roughness testing using Surface Roughness Tester. The SEM and EDX test results show that the electroplating process is successful and the surface of the layer consists of chrome elements as the majority element. Based on the results of micro photographs, the thickness of the chrome layer has increased to 149.41% with a dyeing time of 75 minute. The results of the hardness test showed that the hardness of the chrome layer was able to be increased up to 30.12% with a dyeing time of 75 minutes. The surface roughness test results initially increased by 4.38%, then decreased with the length of the dyeing process to 18.55% for 75 minutes.
