Abstract

Being complex is all the writer can say about language, the mean of human to share their idea. Spoken like the ordinary language and written language like what the writer has done to share his idea in this paragraph, both are the improvement of signs including icon, index, and symbol. The objectives of this research are first to describe the relation between the myths and the index used and second to describe the meaning of the index used to represent the reality occurred in the society. The data are the caricatures which are taken from the SoloPos newspaper. In collecting the data, the writer applied the document technique. The theories used are the Barthes’s theory and Saussure’s theory. The writer emphasizes Barthes’s theory on the myth derived from the denotative and connotative levels and Saussure’s theory in analyzing sign using the signifier and signified criteria. This research is a qualitative interpretative type. In analyzing the relation between the myths and the index used in the caricature, the steps are: analyzing the denotation level, analyzing the connotation level, and analyzing the myth. Analyzing signifier and analyzing the signified are used to analyze the meaning of the indexes used. This research is able to find the relation between the myths and the index used and the meaning of the index used to represent the reality. The relations are the indexes are used based on its function on daily life, some indexes are often used as the official symbol, several indexes used are related to the national day, and others indexes used are fable character and the meanings are referring to the political issues and referring to the myth occurs in the society.
