Abstract

This study aims at describing the implementation of information gap, describing whether information gap can improve the students speaking mastery and describing the students’ responses on the implementation of information gap in teaching speaking. The study was done in SMP 2 Paninggaran Pekalongan at the first year, using action research. The researcher took 38 students as the subject of the research. The writer taught speaking English using information gap method. The action consisted of three cycles in which each cycle consists of two meetings, with each cycle consists of four elements namely: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. To collect the data the researcher used observation, interview, and documents consisted of tests (pre-test and post-test), lesson plan etc. The result of the research shows that, by implementing information gap in teaching speaking, the students have chance to be active and cooperative in teaching speaking. The students motivate themselves to speak and to practice speaking and the students speaking achievement is better. It can be seen from the result of the students’ activities during action, and the students speaking achievement of speaking. The mean score of pre-test is 52, 1 post-test 1 is 60, and post-test 2 is 78. From the students responses it is found that most of the students said that they love this technique. They could easily learn English speaking. The students admitted that their speaking was improved. The students could do the post-test than pre-test which means that the teaching speaking using information gap is successful to improve the students’ motivation to speak
