Abstract

Styrofoam is made from a mixture of 90-95% polystyrene and 5-10% gas such as n-butane or n-pentane and CFC (Freon) as a blowing agent. For now, alternative substitutes for styrofoam are biodegradable foam. The experiment that will be carried out in this study is to make the development of biodegradable foam from α-cellulose cassava skin. The temperature variations used are 150, 160, 170 and 175oC. The time variations used are 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes. This study aims to determine the effect of the time and temperature of the thermopressing process on visual appearance of biodegradable tapioca-based foam and α-cellulose cassava skin, knowing the physical characteristics of biodegradable foam from tapioca mixture and α-cellulose cassava skin produced and knowing the biodegradability of biodegradable foam produced. The best operating conditions in this study were biofoam which was processed at 175oC for 60 minutes with a brownish-white visual appearance and hard texture. Meanwhile, the physical properties of the best biofoam have a value of 54.2763% of water absorption, moisture content of 5.9773%, density of 4.4465 g/cm3 and have biodegradability capability for 36 days.
