Abstract

Nowadays breast cancer is one of the diseases that cause the biggest death in the world. Many researchers want to find alternative therapies using natural ingredients. Spirulina platensis is a blue-green algae that is rich in high antioxidant compounds. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic effects of ethanol and methanol extract of Spirulina platensis on T47D breast cancer cells. Sample extraction using maceration method with ethanol and methanol solvents. Cytotoxic tests in this study used the MTT method. The levels used for the cytotoxic test are 31.25; 62.5; 125; 250 and 500 μg / mL. Then the results are read by an ELISA reader at 550 nm. The average yield of% of living cells of ethanol extract at a concentration of 500 μg / mL was 67.280% while the methanol extract was 54.405%. From the results of the average% of living cells obtained is still high, so IC50 values cannot be calculated. From these results it can be concluded that ethanol and methanol extracts have weak cytotoxic activity against T47D cells. The content of Spirulina platensis extract using TLC with the mobile phase of ethylacetate: nhexan by comparison (7: 3) with the results showed that spirulina ethanol extract contained β-carotene compounds, chlorophyll α, flavonoids and triterpenoids (steroids).
