Abstract

Breast cancer disease in women Indonesia increase. Breast cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation have unwanted side effect. To resolve the issue, the need for exploration of natural materials as anticancer, one of them is spirulina algae (Spirulina platensis L.). This study aims to determine the cytotoxic effects of ethanol and methanol extract of Spirulina platensis L. on MCF-7 cells and find out the classes of compounds contained there in which are useful as anticancer breast. The extraction by the method of maceration with solvent ethanol 96% and methanol. Cytotoxic test by the MTT assay with extract concentration series 31,25; 62,5; 125; 250 and 500 . The absorbance is read by the ELISA rreader at λ550 nm. Phytochemicals test extract by Thin Layer Chromatography using ethyl acetate and hexane (7:3) as mobile phase. Detection using sitroborat, FeCl3, vanilin and lieberman reagents. The cytotoxic test result showed that Spirulina platensis L. does not contain cytotoxic activity. Phytochemical test result of Spirulina platensis L. ethanol extract showed the presence of -carotene and chlorophyll-a pigmen, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids compounds. Methanol extract Spirulina platensis L. contains β-carotene and chlorophyll-a pigments, as well as the flavonoids, steroids, phenolics and terpenoids compounds.
