Abstract

Symptoms seen in paranoid schizophrenia are very consistent, patients can or do not act according to their ideals, patients are often angry, aggressive, fearful, often uncooperative. The family is the person closest to people with mental disorders, people with mental disorders are not likely to overcome the problem of his own mental disorder, therefore the family, especially both parents must have the right attitude in handling it because the attitude taken will determine the recovery of people with mental disorders. Acceptance is one attitude that must be given by the family, especially parents to children who suffer from schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to describe the process of self-acceptance of both parents of paranoid schizophrenia patients undergoing outpatient care at the Surakarta Mental Hospital. The research method uses a qualitative-phenomenological approach. The selection of participants used a purposive sampling technique with 3 families, namely 3 mothers and 3 fathers who had children with paranoid schizophrenia in Surakarta. The results of this study indicate that the process of family self-acceptance of paranoid schizophrenia patients has different processes in each phase of acceptance, there are 1 respondent who experienced rejection and 5 respondents who did not experience rejection, there were 3 respondents who passed the angry phase and 3 respondents did not pass angry phase, 5 respondents felt depressed and 1 respondent did not feel depression, while for the negotiation and acceptance phases passed by all respondents.
