Abstract

Cervical cancer is the second leading cancer with the most frequent occurence in women in Indonesia. Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer and the third leading cause of death in men and women. Cancer therapy currently has low effectiveness value and in some cases shows an intolerable toxicity effect. Hence, it is necessary to used plants as an alternative to anticancer treatment. Fringed spider flower (Cleome rutidospermae D.C.) is one of the plants that has anticancer activity. The purpose of this research were to investigate the cytotoxic activity of ethyl acetate extract of leaves of fringed spider flower against HeLa cells and WiDr cells and investigate the class of compounds in the extract. Leaf extract was obtained by maceration method using ethyl acetate as solvents. The cytotoxic assay was performed based on MTT assay method. The compounds were identified with the tube method. The results of cytotoxic activity test showed that the extract did not have cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells and WiDr cells with IC50 values of 236 and 281,83 µg/mL, respectively. The results of the phytochemical screening analysis showed that the extract contains flavonoids and terpenoids. Ethyl acetate extract of leaves of fringed spider flower did not have potential cytotoxic activity to be used as an new anticancer agent.
