Abstract

Biodegradable plastic was a plastic based material that can be decomposed and is non-toxic. Biodegradable plastic can be cynthesized through the polymerization process. The natural polymer used was cassava starch. The raw materials used were cassava starch (20 grams), aquadestt (40 mL), sorbitol, and glycerol. This study were used the independent variables of glycerol plasticizer (8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mL) and sorbitol plasticizer (8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 mL). Making biodegradable plastic was made by dissolving cassava flour with distilled water, then adding vinegar and plasticizer according to the variable. The starch solution was heated and stirred to be thick and clear. The biodegradable plastic slurry was printed in glass molds. After drying, the biodegradable plastic was applied on paper with a laminating method. The results showed that the physical appearance of the color and surface texture of biodegradable plastic with sorbitol and glycerol plasticizers were the same, namely clear and smooth. However, the addition of glycerol was more moist than sorbitol. In the tensile strength test the best results were obtained on the 12 mL sorbitol of 32 g/cm2. While the elongation test obtained the best value of 13% in the 14 mL sorbitol.
