Abstract

Dissabilities is one of the disorders or handycaps in a physic or motoric t experienced by a person which causes movement barriers or social barriers. It is not easy for people with disabilities to overcome both movement and social barriers, but still open strategies to overcome them. The strategy used is usually called the coping strategy. The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the coping strategies for people with disabilities. The research method used was qualitative phenomenology whose data was collected through interviews with 6 informants. The selection of informants was done by purposive sampling technique with the criteria of disabled people who were still in productive age. The results of the study show that coping strategies used by disabled persons can be divided into two forms, namely Emotion Focus Coping and Problem Focused Coping. In other words, it can be stated that persons with disabilities show different strategies for dealing with problems, both the same and different problems. Problems that are often faced by persons with disabilities in the form of abuse or bullying, feel discriminated, feel underestimated because they are considered unable to obtain decent income-earning jobs, often rejected by potential partners because of physical imperfection, experience rejection of families of potential spouses due to imperfection physical experience, getting discriminatory treatment even from his own family. Other findings from this study indicate that people with disabilities have positive way of thinking, and optimistic about facing the future and hope to get a better life in the future. In addition, support from the family makes disabled people become more confident and encourage achievement.
