Abstract

The development of advanced technology at this time requires good quality materials, especially those made from metal. Mechanical properties of metal materials such as: hardness, strength, ductility, and wear resistance which always relates to the composition and microstructure of the material. This development encourages the need of the metal composition and microstructure in research and technology. This study is purposed to determine the effect of process duration in to composition, microstructure, hardness and wear rate of commercially pure titanium material before and after the plasma nitriding process. The various duration process of 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours and temperature of 350 oC and 450 oC with a fixed nitrogen pressure of 1.6 mBar are applicated. From the test result, it was obtained that the value of the initial hardness (raw material) was 105,75 VHN. The hardness was optimally increased to 227,46 VHN (115 %) by duration process of 4 hours at temperature of 450 oC and pressure of 1,6 mBar. In the wear test, comercially pure titanium has decreased wear rate from 4,0148 x 10-8 to 7,87 x 10-9.
