Abstract

Campus organization is an arena for students in actualizing themselves. As activists, they are expected to be susceptible toward their environmental condition. One of the most common phenomena in student organization is that the students get involved in managing and transforming the conflict that happen within the society. Thus the existence of the student organization functions to benefit the society itself. As a moral responsibility, they should act as an agent of change, social control, and iron stock. This present study aims at identifying and describing their understanding about the social conflict transformation. The subjects of this qualitative study are 30 chairpersons of the student organizations based in Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta that had been previously determined. Those are Muhammadiyah Student Board (IMM), Students Executive Board (BEM), and Student Representative Board (DPM); ten respondents each. The method of collecting data uses an open questionnaire made with the Google form online media platform by analyzing the data using inductive thematic analysis. The result shows that most of them comprehend the meaning of social conflict transformation, it can be seen from the presentation of each aspect which tends to show the concern of activists towards social conflicts that occur. There are two factors that drive their involvement in conflict transformation: internally, the existence of their own encouragement as their moral responsibility during their term in the student organizations; while the external factor is more on the influence of their social backgrounds. That is, such as the oppression carried out by the authorities, concern with the problems experienced by others, and fear that the conflicts that occur will become more widespread. In practice, student organization activists when a conflict occurs have 4 stages, namely, 1) the process of extracting data; 2) data analysis; 3) preparation of work programs; and 4) problem management.
