Abstract

This study deals with the similarities and differences between Anna and the King in the novel and movie versions. This research paper is aimed at analyzing the structural elements of Anna and the King both in the novel and movie versions by finding out the similarities and differences between them. The present writer uses the theory of structural elements of novel and movie version. This research paper is conducted by using the following method. The type of the study is comparing Margaret Landon’s Anna and the King in the novel and the movie version. The types of data are text of the novel and movie scenes. The methods of data collection are library research. The object of this research is Anna and the King novel written by Margaret Landon and the movie directed by Andy Tennant. Based on the data that have been collected and analyzed, I conclude that the similarities of both version lie on the characters and characterization, setting of place and plot. The differences lie on limitation characters and characterization, setting, plot, point of view and theme. Most events in the movie version are changed because Andy Tennant changes the plot of the story. He wants to make the story a little different from the novel. He also wants to save the production costs because the story of the novel is too long, so it will need high costs if the story is not different or changed a little bit from the novel. The film also makes the audiences exhausted if the story is too long. He also enable the audiences to know that he is a liberal man like Prince Chulalongkorn, and he is also wants to convey a massage to the audiences that love is important in the life.
