Abstract
This research aims to improve reading ability by using illustrated storybook media for second grade students of SD Negeri Tunggulsari I Elementary School Surakarta. This type of research is a combined classroom action research conducted in two cycles. For the research design, it used the Kemmis Mc and Teggart models with first grade students who were 20 students as the research subjects. Data collection techniques used were 1) oral reading and written tests, 2) observations, and 3) documentation. Data analysis technique used was descriptive statistical analysis. Indicators of student success that must be achieved with an average of class is 75. The results of the research show that learning to read early by using illustrated storybook media can improve reading skills of second grade students of 2 SD Negeri Tunggulsari I Elementary School Surakarta. Reading skills in pre-action for smooth aspects is 45%, accuracy of reading is 35%, intonation is 15%, and understanding is 40%, in the first cycle increased to 60% smoothness, reading accuracy is 62%, intonation is 32%, and understanding is 65%, an increase in cycle II for smoothness is 85%, accuracy of voice reading is 80%, intonation is 80%, and understanding is 85%. In this action reading skills students with fluency, accuracy in voicing reading, intonation, and understanding increase in each cycle until it reaches the completeness of set
