Abstract

This research aims reveal several kinds of errors in writing Recount text made by the second grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. Those errors are classified based on Dulay, Burt and Krashen’s theory. Moreover, the writer also tells about the reasons or the sources of errors made by them and to count the frequency of each error on their writing text. 2 The method applied on this research is descriptive qualitative method, while the qualitative design on this research uses case study. The researcher collects the data from 35 worksheets. Next, the data are analyzed and classified based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy’s theory which is derived from Dulay, Burt and Krashen. Furthermore, the researcher also analyzes other errors which concern with the way of writing, such as the using of Capital Letter, Deletion (by deleting some unneeded sentences), Misspelling and False Friend. Afterwards, the researcher also found sources of errors that can be classified based on Comparative Taxonomy’s theory, which consists of Interlingual Transfer and Intralingual Transfer. From the result of analysis, the researcher obtained 596 errors which were produced by the students. Later, according to the Dulay et all’s theory, those errors were classified into 4 aspects; there were caused by Omission, Addition, Misformation and Misordering. From the data analysis, Misformation occupied on the first position with the frequency of errors as much as 239 times or 38.75%. Next, Omission is on the second highest position, the researcher found 277 times of errors or 38.08%, then followed by Addition as much as 84 times or 14.09%. The lowest position caused by Misordering as much as 54 times or 9.06%. Besides, the other errors in the way of writing were classified into 4 types, the highest position due to Capital Letter as much as 67 times or 55.37%, then Deletion occupied on the second position as much as 33 times or 27.27%. The third position was occupied by False Friend as much as 17 times or 14.05%, and Misspelling as much as 4 times of errors or 3.3%. Those errors were mostly occurred because the influence from the first language (Interlingual Transfer) and the influence of deviation in English writing’ rules (Intralingual Transfer).
