Abstract

Soil moisture is the amount of water stored between the pores of the soil. Information of soil moisture is included in land information that is very important, because it can be used as a reference policy on land management, such as regional development, water resources management and disaster management. Processing of soil moisture in digital images can be conducted using the TVDI (Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index) method. This study aims to 1) determine the surface soil moisture content in Magelang District, 2) determine the accuracy of soil moisture from pre-field analysis of surface soil moisture in Magelang District, and 3) determine the relationship between soil moisture, landuse and topography. TVDI method was applied to extract the soil moisture value. This method used vegetation density parameters based on the NDVI (Normalize Different Vegetation Index) transformation and Soil Surface Temperature of Land Surface Temperature LST. The accuracy analysis was done by comparing the soil moisture from TVDI and actual surface soil moisture of some sample locations. The relationship between soil moisture, landuse and slope was identified by descriptive qualitative analysis. Surface soil moisture content in Magelang Regency was dominated by rather dry soil moisture (69,940,391 Ha), equivalent to 64.42% of the total. This class is located in Mertoyudan District, Mungkid District, Muntilan District, Salam District and Ngluwar District. The accuracy of the results is good, with an accuracy of 86.67%. Additionally, the results shows that highly related to landuse and slope. The drier moisture often found ini flat area with built up landuse. Meanwhile, the highest moisture often found in steep slope and densly vegetated area.
