Abstract

Abstract The plasma nitriding process against AISI 4140 steel was tested for hardness using the Vikers testing method and observed the microstructure. The purpose of this study was to determine the hardness of AISI 4140 steel with the plasma nitriding process to achieve optimum levels of hardness. Test samples in the form of AISI 4140 steel were cut into 30 test samples, then autosol polishing was done using sandpaper with a size of 120 to 5000 mesh. Then the polished sample is hydrated with a pressure variation of 1.2; 1.4: 1.6; 1.8 and 2.0 mbar at 450 450C and 3 hours. The results of the hardness obtained after varying pressures, the greatest or optimum hardness is obtained at a pressure of 1.4 mbar. Then the results of the SEM test showed that the amount of nitrogen that could have been deposited on the surface of the AISI 4140 steel substrate could not be identified, because the layer was too thin. While the results of EDX produce iron (Fe), with a mixture of carbon (C) with other elements such as a mixture of Oxygen (O), Magnesium (Mg), Silicon (Si), Calcium (Ca) and Nitrogen (N).
