Abstract

Indonesia as a developing country is well aware and strives to improve the quality of human resources in facing future challenges. One way to develop HR is through education. Education is very important to advance the mindset of the Indonesian people. But in reality education in Indonesia still has to work hard to foster interest in learning for the next generation. One indication is the low interest in reading in this country. From the UNESCO data the Indonesian reading interest index has only reached 0.001. This means that in every 1000 people only 1 has an interest in reading. The low reading interest of the Indonesian people is caused by several factors, among others, the Indonesian people prefer to spend their time watching television, listening to the radio, busy in the internet world rather than reading books or newspapers and other print media. The purpose of this study is to describe the contribution of Friday reading programs in school literacy activities. Qualitative research with methods of observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the research, Friday reading program in school literacy activities: (a) Planning for Friday programs read through coordination and commitment of all elements of the school. (b) The Friday program is read under the guidance and direction of the teacher. (c) The Friday reading program contribution can increase reading interest, increase knowledge and increase the number of library visitors.
