Abstract
Bacillus cereus is a bacterium that causes poisoning which is indicated by symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, while Salmonella typhi is a bacterium that causes typhoid fever which still often happen in Indonesia. Indian fleabane and garden balsam leaves contain flavonoid, alkaloid, saponin, and essential oil that have been known to have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the bacterial activity of ethanolic extract of garden balsam leaves (Impatiens balsamina L.) and indian fleabane leaves (Pluchea indica L.) against Bacillus cereus and Salmonella typhi. Extraction was done using maceration method with ethanol 70% as the solvent. Antibacterial activity tests were carried out by disc diffusion and broth dilution methods. The result showed the inhibitory zones of extract indian fleabane leaves with a consentration of 50% against Bacillus cereus and Salmonella typhi bacterium were 8 mm and 12,7 mm, while extract of garden balsam leaves have the same inhibitory zone on both bacteria that was 13 mm. The MIC of each extract cannot be determined while MBC of each extract was greater than 12,5%.
