Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a welding technology where the process is a solid connection that can be used to connect materials that are difficult to weld on fushion welding. This research is using friction stir welding method to find out the effect variation of feedrate on mechanical characteristic and micro structure on dissimilar metals joint between carbon steel SS400 and alumunium AA5052 with 3mm thickness. The welding process is using a milling machine with variation of feedrate parameters are 30 mm / min, 35 mm / min, and 40 mm / min. The constant parameters that used are the speed of rotation tool 1500 rpm and the tilt angle tool of 30. Then the tests include tensile test, macro hardness test, and micro structure test. The results of the highest tensile strength study were 51.26 MPa at a feedrate of 30 mm / minute. The highest hardness value at weld nugget is 256,053 HVN at feedrate 30 mm / minute. This is affected by the temperature produced by the feedrate speed. Photo in the base metal, HAZ and weld nugget area produce a different look. In the HAZ area microsturucture becomes rough due to the temperature received, while the weld nugget shows a small and tight appearance of the microstructure.
