Abstract

Energy is one of the driving aspects in various sectors of life. The biggest energy source that is used in many countries in the world especially Indonesia comes from fuel oil (BBM). Currently, Indonesia is an oil importing country if it’s not wise in the use of oil. Therefore, there is a need for alternative fuels that can replace BBM, one of them is biodiesel. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel made from vegetable oils, such as coconut dregs. Coconut dregs can be converted into biodiesel by fermenting using yeast tape with a concentration of 1.60% per weight of pulp material for 24 hours, then it’s extracted to get the oil to occupy it. In this study, coconut dregs can be converted into biodiesel with sonication method that use an ultrasonic device with a 60 kHz frequency wave in the transesterification process occurs. In the sonication process, the reaction temperature is kept constant at 60oC with the addition 2.00% CaO catalyst of the oil mass. The variables used were the ratio of oil & methanol (1:15, 1:12, 1:9) as well as the variation of reaction time of sonication (45, 60, and 75 minutes). The result of biodiesel is tested for its feasibility by a kinematic viscosity test, acid number / FFA, density, yield, and conversion of methyl ester content. All the test, obtained biodiesel that meets the quality of Biodiesel SNI 7182:2015 at 1:15 ratio that appear the largest yield of meth ester of 33.25% with 2.00% catalyst for 60 minutes at 60oC with methyl ester conversion result reach to 52.3%.
