Abstract

This research is aimed at giving description of Register Used by Indonesian National Police. The objective study is to describe the form, the meaning, and the using of register in communication. In collecting data, the writer conducts observation, interview, and document. There are 77 registers collected as the data. The writer merely analyzes all the data to get in depth of understanding using referential forms, meanings and the using of register. The study shows that (1) The form of registers of Indonesian National Police consist of 14 simple words (18,2%), 19 abbreviations (24,7%), 26 acronyms (33,8%), 11 compounds (14,3%), 6 noun phrases (7,8%), and 1 noun verb (1,2%). Based on the class word (70 data), the registers consist of 66 nouns (94,3%) and 4 verbs (5,7%). The registers which are from Indonesian language are 64 items (83,1%) and from English are 13 items (16,9%). (2) The meaning of registers of Indonesian National Police: a) The meaning in the dictionary is broader than the contextual meaning that are 10 data (12,9%). b) The meaning in the dictionary is identical with the contextual that are 10 data (12,9%). c) The meaning in the dictionary is different with the contextual meaning that are 14 items (18,3%). d) The meaning of register does not have the real meaning that are 43 data (55,9%). (3) The use of register of Indonesian National Police are some registers only in communication in duty which are in oral form that are 15 data (19,5%), only in administration communication which are in written form that are 6 data (7,8%), and in communication on duty which is in oral form and administration communication which is in written form that are 56 data (72,7%). Meanwhile, the register are used only by police are 42 items (54,5%) and used by police and other are 35 items (45,5%).
