Abstract

The use of sand molding framework with red sand media will affect the quality of cast products. The purpose of this research to find out the effect of variation of red sand frame size to cast quality, cast defect, and hardness value. This research used Alumunium (Al) material used or rubbed back using furnace. The variations of sand frame size used are 20 mm, 40 mm, 60 mm. The data analysis showed that the value of shrinkage percentage for 20 mm mold variation was 0.928%, while the printing variation of 40 mm was 0.846%, and 20 mm printing variation was 0.392%. From the observation of porosity defects of cast products using a 20 mm molding variation has a slightly porosity rate compared to 40 mm mold variation and 60 mm mold variation. The result showed of chemical composition there were 17 elements, but the dominant element in cast Al casting were 2 Si Si 11.9% and Fe 4.9%, while for Al 81.44%. Seen from the existing elements, this material could be classified aluminum alloy silicon metal (Al-Si). The hardness of cast aluminum product used 20 mm mold variation reached 93,0344 HV, the hardness price was highest compared to the hardness of mold variation of 40 mm 92,3126 HV and 60 mm variation of 91,6008 HV. For molding time and casting costs at 20 mm frame molding variations have the highest time efficiency and cost where the time required to make molds for 333 seconds and total cost required is Rp 89,386.
