Abstract

The need for fossil fuels from fossils is still a major source of energy in the world. Human energy needs are increasing while fossil fuels cannot be renewed. Biodisel is an alternative fuel derived from plant oils, animal fats, and used oil. Castor oil (Jatropha Curcas L.) has the potential to be processed into biodiesel fuel because castor oil is included in non-edible oils so that it does not interfere with food security, the oil content of castor oil is large at 50-60%. The transesterification method was chosen because the process is simple by converting triglycerides to alkyl esters by reaction with alcohol and glycerol as by-products. In the transesterification process, it is generally carried out by adding catalysts. Fly ash has the potential to be used as a catalyst in the manufacture of biodiesel because it is composed of several porous oxides, SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and CaO. This study aims to examine the effect of catalyst implantation time (1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 18 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours) on the performance of catalysts in the manufacture of biodiesel from castor oil. The application of the transesterification method with 90 minutes reaction time control variable, 6% catalyst weight, and temperature 60 ° C. Biodiesel produced with a density of 0.809 - 0.793 g / cm3 with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) in the range of 0.85 - 0.90 g / cm3 and a yield of 11.07% for a variation of 18 hours impregnation time. Then an analysis of fly ash catalysts was carried out using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) method.
