Abstract

One alternative energy that is relatively cheap in terms of production aspects and relatively environmentally friendly is the development of bioethanol from wastes containing a lot of lignocellulose such as HVS paper. The paper contains about 85% of cellulose, 8% of hemicellulose, 5% of lignin and the rest is in the form of ash compound, so it is worthy of being converted into bioethanol. Bioethanol is a product of hydrolysis starch into glucose on enzymatic and acidic, followed by glucose fermentation using yeast. This study aims to obtain optimum ethanol levels in the fermentation process by the types of acids (HCl and H2SO4), acid concentration (0.5N and 2N) and the effect of acid hydrolysis time (4,5,6,7 hours) using bread yeast (fermipan ) The results of the study using 5 grams of used HVS paper showed that 2N HCl concentration for 7 hours produced the highest ethanol content of 0.1433% and H2SO4 0.5N concentration for 4 hours resulted in the lowest ethanol content of 0.0052%. The longer the hydrolysis time, the higher the ethanol content produced in the fermentation process. The greater concentration of the acid hydrolysis process used, the greater of ethanol content from used HVS paper.
