Abstract

Red Ginger (Zingiber officinalle) is a plant containing oleoresin compounds that act as anti-inflammatory. Red ginger rhizome extract is formulated into gel preparation to make it more practical and easier to use. This study aims to determine the ratio of concentrations between Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) as gelling agent and propylenglycol as humectant so that it will produce gel formula having optimum physical properties with viscosity, spreading, high adhesion. This research was conducted by making 8 designs of formula using variation of HPMC and propylenglycol 5,5%, 13%, 6%, 13%, 4%, 15%, 5%, 14%, 4,5%, 14, , 5%, 5%, 14%, 4%, 15%, 6%, 13%. Testing the physical properties of red ginger rhizome extract gel is done by covering organoleptic test, pH, viscosity, spreading, stickiness and physical stability. The optimization is done using Design Expert 10 program with Simplex Lattice Design method which will produce optimum formula and physical properties prediction covering viscosity, spreading, and stickiness. The optimum formula obtained is then verified. The predicted data and verification results were statistically tested using one sample t-test while the stability test was statistically tested using paired sample t-test with 95% confidence level. The optimum formula of red ginger rhizome extract gel resulted was HPMC 4.32% and propylenglycol 14.68%. The results of statistical tests of prediction and verification data indicate that there is no significant difference in viscosity, spreadability, and stickiness.
