Abstract

Education is very important in human life. Education intends to cultivate their individual humanitarian potentials.This study aims to describe the errors and factors causing students to make mistakes in solving material problems in two-variable linear equations system. This type of research is qualitative. The subjects of this study are students of class VIII C SMP Muhammadiyah I Kartasura which amounted to 32 students. Data collection techniques in this study are tests, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques performed with data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or verification. The validity of the data in this study is obtained through source triangulation by comparing test data, interviews and documentation. The analysis guidelines are developed based on the type of Newman's error. The results of analysis of the research data obtained 4 types of 15,15% comprehension error, 43,94% transformation error, 37,88% process skills error and 3,03% encoding error. Factors causing these errors are students who forgot to write the known and asked and students who lazy to write the things that are known and asked from the problems, the lack of student problem solving skills, and do not know the exact formula in solving the problem, students who are less thorough in the process of calculation, and has not mastered the understanding of the concept of substitution of the value of a requested equation, the lack of precision and haste in writing the final answer.
