Abstract

The major problem of this study is to describe the movement of black Americans in order to break the hegemony which is surfaced by white Americans. The objectives of the study are to analyze the structural elements of Malcolm X movie and to analyze the relation between the movie and the social background of American society in 1990s based on sociological approach. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative method in which data are based on the primary data source; Malcolm X movie. While the secondary data sources are the movie script of Malcolm X and some reviews of the movie which are collected from various source and also other data which deal with the study. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies two approaches. The first is structural analysis approach which used to analyze the structural elements of the movie. The second is sociological approach which used to analyze the relation between the movie and the social life of the Americans. Based on the analysis above, the researcher found that Malcolm X movie has interrelated structural elements which formulate a unity form. Each element completes each other in building a good story. Sociologically, Malcolm X movie is a representation of the social life of the Americans. The major character of the movie, Malcolm Little, success in leading the movement against the majority oppression and break the border which separates the Americans. Malcolm X movie can change the mindset of the Americans and explain that each human has an equal position in the society.
