Abstract

This research aims to describe students' errors and analyze the causes of the students in solving the story of cube and block volumes based on Van Hiele's theory in terms of gender in grade VIII B students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research are students of class VIII B SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. Data collection methods used are tests, interviews, and documentation. Validity of data used is triangulation method by comparing test result, interview, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results showed that: (1) male students had reached level 0 visualization (recognition) and level 1 analysis (2) female students had also reached level 0 visualization (recognition) and level 1 analysis, (3) the level of thinking of junior high school students in class VIII only reached at level 0 visualization (recognition) and level 1 analysis (analysis) based on Van Hiele theory. (4) male students make more mistakes than female students. Male student errors include procedural errors, errors in formulas, errors using formulas, and errors in mastering the concepts of cubes and blocks.
