Abstract

ABSTRACT Instagram is a form of social media that arises as a result of advances in information technology, which can be used to publish the photo, video or even user’ opinion as a media that provide a space for communication and interaction in social networks in cyberspace. Instagram can also be a bridge to build communication network fellow Instagram users. Through profiles, user-disclosed activities are the way to communicate with each other, for example commenting on content that was uploaded. The type of this research is quantitative that using descriptive as the approach. The population in this research is Science Communication students of Muhammadiyah University Surakarta, using 97 students as the sample of the research was obtained by using slovin formula with Purposive Sampling technique. The technique of collecting data using closed questionnaire. Data analysis technique in this research use the gap of analysis (discrepancy) between motives and satisfaction against the @umsurakarta Instagram account. The results of this research: The accounts showed that @umsurakarta Instagram can fulfill the needs of Science Communication students who follow the @umsurakarta Instagram account, based on the mean value of total gratification sought (GS) i.e. 31.62 is smaller than the overall mean values obtained gratification (GO) i.e. 31.82 this indicates that the media can satisfy the audience. Based on gap analysis on each item statement showed that the level of satisfaction of Science Communication students in follow account Instagram @umsurakarta 7 among 12 items of the statement has satisfaction level in the medium category while 5 remain in the high category.
