Abstract

Comprehension skills of students in learning affect them when they are solving items. Error made by students can identify to what extent they understand the subject matter. Errors made will result in the learning outcomes obtained by students. In order to prevent error from occurring repeatedly and to improve students’ learning outcomes, error analysis is required. This research is aimed to describe students’ error on solving story items in the subject of linear program by eleventh grade and to analyze the cause of errors made by them. This research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of the research are eleventh grade students of AP SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta in the academic year 2017/2018. Data was collected through test, interview, and documents. The technique to analyze data was by data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. Based on the result of data analysis, the research suggests that (1) 11,11% of students experienced reading error, (2) 28,88% of students experienced error comprehension, (3) 31,11% of students experienced error transformation, (4) 64,44% of students experienced process skills error, (5) 40% of students experienced encoding error. The causes of errors were the students did not understand the meaning of items given, the students had not mastered prerequisite materials, the students did not fully understand the subject of linear program, the students forgot the formula and basic concepts of linear equation system and inequalities system of two variables, the students lacked training on solving items of linear program, the students were not thorough in performing arithmetic operations, and the students did not recheck the answers.
