Abstract

Background: Root canal irrigation is a method to remove necrotic tissue, microorganisms, and flakes of dentin from root canal during the procedure of preparation. Irrigation materials that usually use is 2.5% NaOCl which have broad spectrum antibacterial and can influence lowering the hardness of root canal microdentin. Star fruit contain antibacterial factor that equals to 2.5% NaOCl so that can be alternative root canal irrigation material. Objective: To determine the effect of starfruit (Averrhoa blimbi L.) to lowering dentin microhardness of root canal. Methods: This study used pre test and post test control group design which measures microdentine harness of root canal on 27 samples premolar mandibular teeth was devided to three groups. Group I immersed in saline, group II immersed in star fruit (Averrhoa blimbi L.), dan group III immersed in 2,5% NaOCl. All samples immersed for 10 minute and then measured with Vicker’s Microhardness Tester. Statistical analysis was performed by One-Way Anova and post-hoc LSD test. Results: Statistical analysis showed a significant difference on dentin microhardness of root canal (p<0,05). Sample that immersed in saline had the lowest value of dentin microhardness (1,62 VHN) compared with 2,5% NaOCl (18,52 VHN) and star fruit juice (10,58 VHN). Conclution: Lowering dentin microhardness of root canal is influenced by star fruit juice (Averrhoa blimbi L.) is smaller than 2,5% NaOCl.
