Abstract

It’s mentioned in al-Qur’an term kafir ini 525 verses. One way to understand the term comprehensively is through the interpretation of al-Qur’an. There are varios views of mufassir toward interpretation of kafir. M. Quraish Shihab is one of indonesian mufassir, who interpreted al-Qur’an deeply, especially in al-Mishbah; messages, impression and harmony of al-Qur’an. This research aims to know the meaning of kafir, according to Quraish in al-Mishbah. It is library in nature, that use al-Mishbah as primary resources. As for secondary ones are books, journals and articles related to the object. And use interpretive approach. This research reveals that kafir according to Quraish has variety of meaning. First, people who don’t believe in Allah the almighty, his messengers, angels and the hereafter. Second, people reluctant to thank for what given by God. Third, those who urge himself and others not to accept Islam. Fourth, believeres but not apply Islamic tenets. Fifth, the ones who treat Islam as game. Al-Mishbah belongs to analytical method with a social literature in nature.
