Abstract

This study aims to describe students' reasoning abilities in solving linear matter inequality variable questions of a class VII. The students' reasoning abilities are reviewed based on 3 indicators: the ability to file allegations, manipulate mathematics and the ability to give reasons or evidence to the solution. The subjects of this study were the students of class VII A1 MTs Negeri 1 Wonogiri academic year 2017/2018 based on high, medium and low value categories. This type of research is qualitative research. Data collection techniques used documentation techniques and interview techniques. Data analysis techniques using data reduction, data presentation and verification or withdrawal of conclusions while the validity of data in this qualitative research using triangulation techniques. The results showed that high-class students were able to file allegations, perform mathematical manipulations and give reasons or evidence to the solution well. Medium category students are able to file allegations but are not good enough and have not been able to provide a reason or evidence against the solution correctly and appropriately. Low category students have not been able to put forward a good guess and have not been able to give a reason or proof to the solution. The middle and low category students were able to perform mathematical manipulations but the results were incorrect. Students' reasoning abilities in solving story problems require excellent understanding so that not a few students read the questions repeatedly.
