Abstract

Ultraviolet radiation of the sun are harmful to skin if exposing for too long time as they can cause sunburn and skin cancer. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are good active ingredient for sunscreens because they can absorb ultraviolet radiation and do not irritate skin during application and are made in the emulsion form. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum concentration of Carbopol 934 and sodium lauryl sulfate based on its physical properties and to know the sunscreen activity in vitro from the emulgel zinc oxide nanoparticles. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by Sol-Gel method and characterized using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). The formulation was prepared with variation concentration of Carbopol 934 and sodium lauryl sulfate, the optimization was done using Design Expert v.11 (trial) with factorial design method. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) assays were carried out using UV spectrophotometry. The results of the verification test then were analyzed by one sample T-test to compare with the prediction value. The size of the zinc oxide nanoparticles obtained was 160.00 ± 15.49 nm. Combination of Carbopol 934 and sodium lauryl sulphate might affect the physical properties of the sunscreen emulgel preparation which included pH value, viscosity, spreadability, and adherence response. Emulgel sunscreen zinc oxide nanoparticles had activity in the presence of SPF values. The optimum formula was obtained with 2.5 g of sodium lauryl sulphate and 0.89 g Carbopol 934 with pH value 5.6, 4.12 cm spread, 2.00 seconds stickiness, viscosity 399.99 dPa, SPF value 11.86 and desirability value equal to 0.899. The one sample T-test showed the p-value of all evaluations over 0.05 indicating no difference between the predicted value of the factorial design method with the verification test result.
