Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the ability of reading comprehension by the second year students of SMPN 2 Gatak Sukoharjo, (2) to describe the problems faced by the second year student’s of SMPN 2 Gatak Sukoharjo in reading comprehension, (3) to describe the problem solving faced by the second year students’ of SMPN 2 Gatak Sukoharjo in reading comprehension. This reserach is a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher collects the data by observing the English class and conducting in interview with the teacher. The data include reading material, field notes and interview script. And the methods of collecting the data are observation, interview, and documents. The methods of collecting data are observation, interview, and documentation. Based on the analysis, the writer draws some conclusions. The first, the ability of the students in answering the questions of reading comprehension belongs to good categories. The second, the problem faced by the students are; (1) the students have limited vocabulary, (2) the students have limited knowledge and experience, and (3) the school has limited facilities. The third, the strategies to solve the problems are; (1) the teacher asks to read and memorize the meaning of new English words when they cannot find the meaning of those words, (2) the teacher gives exercise and gives additional score to them if the students answer correctly, and the teacher also gives home work to the students after he gives the explanation, (3) the teacher tries to solve the problems by giving story books in order the students get more information about the content of books especially in reading.
