Abstract

Spot welding is one of the electrical resistance welding methods that are often used in the automotive industry. Stainless steel and aluminum are materials that can not be separated in the field of automotive industry. This study aims to determine the mechanical properties of the point weld joint between aluminum and stainless steel. This research uses point welding method with unlike metals and zinc coating result of electroplating coating process. The study was conducted with current parameters of 6000 A, 7000 A, 8000 A and welding time of 0.2 seconds, 0.3 seconds, 0.4 seconds. The tests were tensile test with ASME QW-462.9 test standard and vickers microhardeness test with AWS test standard D8.9-97. The results showed that the addition of zinc layer of electroplating process has a negative effect on the strength of welded joints. For the most optimal welded joint strength occurs in specimens without zinc coating on current variations of 8000 A and time of 0.4 seconds. As for the highest hardness value found in the area of metal welding (nugget) on the specimen without using zinc layer result of electroplating process with current 8000 A and time 0,4 second.
