Abstract

This research paper is aimed at describing the implementation of outdoor activities method in teaching English at kindergarten students at POINT Education Center Surakarta, the problems faced by the teacher and the students in teaching learning process and the underlying principles of teaching English using outdoor activities. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The data in this research are derived from event, document and informant. The data are gained from observation and interview with the teacher and the students. Based on the observation and interview, the writer draws some conclusion about the implementation of outdoor activities in teaching English at Kindergarten students of POINT Education Center Surakarta. First, outdoor activities is implemented in teaching English at POINT. The teacher uses teaching aids and focuses on body movement. So, the teacher puts the students in the positive teaching situation. Second, in teaching English using outdoor activities, the teacher finds several problems, namely the time alotment, different capability of students and the students’ low motivation at home, the students unwillingness to listen, the learners’ mood, the teacher’s energy to teach the students, media and time management a lot. The learners’ problems are they are doubt with the method, so they refuse to move when commended by the teacher and the students were still confused about the new words, and the underlying principles of teaching English using outdoor activities are Total physical Respond, Contextual Target Language, and Silent Way.Total physical Respond containts of giving command, introducing other item, doing physical action, doing role reversal, reading and writing, listening, questioning/answering and repetition, Contextual Target Language deals with constructivism, Inquiring, Questioning, and Modeling, Silent Way deals of look and listen, listen and repeat, and exercise
