Abstract

The fuel needs of the world today increase significantly. This causes the world fuel supplies to thin out the the global warming, it also affect on the fuel fulfilment of transport, except causing industry and households. Therefore, it requires an alternative energy which is renewable and friendly environment such as bioethanol. Bioethanol can be yielded from materials that have a high cellulose content, to be processed into ethanol through a hydrolysis and fermentation. This research aims to know the optimum conditions of producing bioethanol from coconut fibers through delignification process, hydrolysis, and fermentation. The process of delignification of coconut fibers was carried out using NaOH 2,5% for 2 at a temperature of 85oC and then was hydrolyzed with H2SO4 concentration variations of 10%, 20%, 30%, and a variations time of 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours. The next process was fermentation in anaerobic state for 120 hours at room temperature with the help of the yeast and nutrients in the form of urea. The analysis of ethanol content was conducted using refractometer, and obtained the optimum condition of hydrolysis process to be 10% H2SO4 use for 3 hours with ethanol concentration of 13,76%.
