Abstract

The abondon waste of rice bran in the surrounding environment can be processed into a more valuable product. One of them is as the source of plant oil, called rice bran oil (RBO). The oil content in rice bran is about 17-22% by weight. RBO is beneficial to health because it contains a natural antioxidant γ-oryzanol that can lower bad cholesterol (very low density lipoprotein), and increase good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein) in blood and prevent free radials, more effectively than vitamine E. This study used an extraction method with an ethyl acetate solvent to extract the bran, then a rotary evaporator process was performed to separate the oil from the solvent which was still included in the soxhlet extraction. RBO quality testing included density, % yield, % Free Fatty Acid (FFA) and saponification rate. The test results obtained the optimum quality of RBO (density, % yield, % FFA, and saponification rate) obtained at bran and solvent ratio of 50: 250 with extraction time 5 hours.
