Abstract

Today plastic is a vital necessity for human life. In Indonesia, plastic waste production is ranked second in domestic waste producers at 5.4 million tons per year. Based on Indonesia's domestic waste data, the amount of plastic waste is 14 percent of total waste production in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the mechanical characteristics and water absorption of biodegradable plastic composites made from polypropylene mixture (PP) and the powder of aren waste. In this research, the weight fraction ratio of polypropylene (PP) and the powder of the waste of aren used is 90%: 10%; 80%: 20%; 70%: 30%. And water absorption test for 1, 7, and 14 days. From the test results obtained the best mechanical properties test on the composition of the weight fraction composition of 90%: 10% with the treatment soaked water each for 0, 1.7, 14 days obtained tensile stress of 21.36 MPa, 20.87 MPa, 19, 26 MPa, 19,20 MPa. Strain of 1.57%, 1.74%, 1.28%, 1.28%. The elastic modulus of 1368.09 MPa, 1490.55 MPa, 1510.95 MPa, 1597.52 MPa. Water absorption capacity of biodegradable plastic composites for 1, 7, and 14 days by 0.862%, 2.907%, and 3.185%. Biodegradable plastic composites with a ratio of 90%: 10% have characteristics compatible with commercial plastics and can be degraded more easily.
